ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – There is another exciting addition to the Albuquerque Zoo the birth of a baby howler monkey.

Officials say it was born Monday and is already on display at the Tropical America exhibit.

Howler monkeys live high in the trees in Central and South America.

They are known for their loud, boisterous calls.

Zookeepers have not yet been able to determine if it’s a boy or a girl.

They say baby howler monkeys are born with yellow hair.

Females will remain yellow all their lives, but males begin to turn black at around two years of age. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
