More details released on veteran’s death in hospital

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – We now know more about the veteran who died at a VA Hospital cafeteria recently in Albuquerque while he waited for an ambulance.

The family of 71-year-old Jim Napoleon Garcia – a Vietnam veteran – says he died while waiting for an ambulance to take him to the emergency room which was only 500 yards away.

Hospital officials say it took 15 to 20 minutes for an ambulance to be dispatched to take Garcia from one building to another.

VA spokeswoman Sonja Brown says staff followed policy in calling 911 after Garcia collapsed last week.

She went on to say that the policy is under review.
