Police ID man killed in Rio Arriba County crash

RIO ARRIBA COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – The man who died in a crash in Rio Arriba County on Monday has been identified and investigators say they now suspect alcohol was a factor.

Richard Woerner was driving on highway 68 just north of Española when he veered into oncoming traffic and hit a car head-on another car then slammed into that wreck.

Woerner was killed and two adults and two young children were airlifted to University Hospital in Albuquerque.

There’s no word on their conditions.

Documents inside the car indicates Woerner may be from Ranchos de Taos, but there was no driver’s license found.

Authorities are investigating whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash but they do say they found items at the scene that indicates they may have been involved.
