Witness speaks out about fatal hit-and-run

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – There’s been another deadly hit-and-run in Albuquerque – the third in as many weeks.

This one happened at about 9:15 p.m. Tuesday on San Mateo between Comanche and Candelaria when Donald Gonzales, 50, was crossing the road.

One person at the scene said he saw the whole incdient.

“This guy was jaywalking. This van was going probably about 30 or 40. He tried to jump back and dodge, but the van hit his knee and flew,” said witness Matthew Griffie. “So we ran around the block and then this little older Lexis ran him over and dragged him way over there.”

Griffie says the van slowed down a bit after it the man, but didn’t stop, and the Lexis kept going.

Griffie says three other people also saw it happen and they all rushed over to Gonzales.

“And then, like, this one guy checked his pulse and he was breathing. He was taking, like, big, big gasps for air, and he took his last gasps and then the paramedics came and all that, and they said he passed away,” Griffie said.

Albuquerque police closed down the area while they investigated.
