Number of early voters grows throughout state

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – It looks like voters don’t like waiting for actual Election Day anymore.

Primary election returns show a growing portion of New Mexico voters are casting their ballots early.

About 40 percent of voters in the June primary took advantage of absentee ballots or early in-person voting.

That’s up from 35 percent in 2010, and 24 percent in 2006.

New Mexico has relaxed absentee voting requirements and implemented early voting to make it more convenient for voters.

Nearly 203,000 total ballots were cast in this year’s primary statewide. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
