ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A non-profit bar that used its revenues to support artists is calling it quits.
Art Bar in downtown Albuquerque was cited by the state because they appeared in a calendar write up in the weekly Alibi newspaper.
State alcohol regulators said that violated a rule that as a non-profit; they are not allowed to advertise.
The citation was reduced to a warning, but the founders say continued scrutiny by the state is forcing them to close.
The bar was also cited for a membership policy that it adjusted because of the citation.
More than 1,000 people have signed an online petition criticizing regulators in this case.
Regulators tell KRQE News 13 they would like the business to operate in the state, but they have to follow the rules for a non-profit.
