WIPP leak investigation creeps forward

CARLSBAD, N.M. (KRQE) – The very cautious investigation of the radiation leak at WIPP is moving slowly ahead.

The Energy Department says phase two which is about to start, will include controlled entries by a team of experts into the underground storage area where the radiation originated.

They will try to reach the waste container that’s believed to be the source of it and check other containers for damage.

The leak occurred February 14th and it could be three years before the waste storage site near Carlsbad reopens.
