Runaway tortoise slows Santa Fe traffic

SANTA FE (KRQE) – A 150-pound tortoise slowed traffic around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday on Old Santa Fe Trail in Santa Fe.

Police say the tortoise, Plato, escaped from its home on North Spur Road and may have been missing overnight. Officers were able to quickly catch the animal and return it to its owner.

But the tortoise isn’t the only unusual animal encounter police have had this week.

Last Friday, a homeowner spotted a porcupine on Cedros Circle and almost stepped on it. The animal got spooked, climbed a tree and stayed there until officers arrived to capture and relocate it. Police say they took the porcupine to the Hyde Park area and released it.
