HOBBS, N.M. (KRQE) – The state police officer hit by a suspected drunk driver near Hobbs is out of the hospital but still recovering.

Carlos Verdugo was conducting a traffic stop on Saturday and was inside his vehicle when he was rear-ended by another driver.

Officer Verdugo was airlifted to a hospital in Lubbock in critical condition.

Late Sunday he was released from the hospital.

The suspected drunk driver, 40-year-old Jason Allred of Hobbs remains in the hospital and is charged with great bodily harm by vehicle, reckless driving and aggravated DWI.

Investigators say they’ve obtained a warrant for his blood to test his alcohol level.

As for Verdugo, he will remain at home recovering. It’s unclear when he’ll be well enough to return to work.

He’s been with state police for a year and a half. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
