Man threatens people with cane, challenges cops

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Police are investigating an incident where a man stirred up quite a commotion at an Albuquerque restaurant.

On Sunday, police say a man suffering with mental illness went into the Wienerschnitzel near Juan Tabo and Central and threatened employees with his cane.

They said 42-year-old Dennis Martinez told other customers he wanted to kill people and burn the restaurant down.

At one point, Martinez was on the phone with dispatch, saying he wanted officers to shoot him.

“While inside the business, he was using his cane and bringing it up to his shoulder as though it were a rifle,” said officer Tanner Tixier of APD.

The restaurant was evacuated.

Martinez was arrested about 20 minutes later.

He is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
