PORTALES, N.M. (KRQE) – A standoff in southern New Mexico left one man shot and three of his dogs dead.
Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Department said it started around 7 a.m. in Portales, after a 45-year-old man was upset over being evicted.
They say he broke the windows of the house with a rifle and threatened to kill officers and himself.
When officers finally talked the man out, they say they saw the suspect had shot himself in the chest and found three of his dogs dead in the home.
The suspect told police that he was afraid no one would take care of the animals.
He was flown to a hospital and is in critical condition.
