ARTESIA, N.M. (KRQE) – It was a 10-minute vehicle pursuit, spanning close to seven miles through busy streets and hectic highways in Eddy County.
The Sheriff’s Office said it all started around 2 a.m. Sunday when a man in his mid-40’s reported someone had stolen his trailer.
Investigators said while they were working on gathering evidence, the victim started searching for the robber.
“He decided to call a friend and they got together and drove around to find the trailer on their own,” said Sergeant Mike Chavarria.
Chavarria said while the two men were driving around they located a brown Dodge-Ram truck. They told detectives they thought whoever was driving the truck may have had something to do with the missing trailer.
Deputies said the victim and his friend started chasing the vehicle and when it didn’t stop, the victim fired rounds into the air.
Next, the guy they were chasing pulled out his gun.
Chavarria said the two vehicles eventually came to a stop at the intersection of York Street and Main Street. That’s when he said the suspect opened fire hitting both victims.
The driver suffered a gunshot wound to his arm and is being treated at a Texas hospital. The passenger was hit in the back.
Both are expected to survive.
As for the man who shot them, he got away.
Detectives said this could have been prevented.
“If law enforcement would have been notified and got them involved this probably wouldn’t have happened,” said Chavarria.
Deputies don’t know if the man the two victims were chasing is actually the trailer thief.
They said the victims weren’t able to give them a description of the shooter, only a description of the truck.
