Lightning sparks wildfire in northern NM

Pueblano Fire
Lightning is being blamed for the latest fire in New Mexico, the Pueblano Fire.

UTE PARK, N.M. (AP) – Crews are responding to a lightning-caused wildfire on the Philmont Scout Ranch, five miles north of Ute Park near the Pueblano Campground.

The New Mexico State Forestry estimates the fire has charred about 12 acres by Friday afternoon.

Forestry spokesman Dan Ware says the fire is burning in grass and trees and being pushed by high winds.

Ware says three structures in the Pueblano Campground are threatened, but there are no evacuations.

Authorities say Boy Scouts have been relocated to different parts of the ranch as a precautionary measure. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
