ABQ World Cup fever continues despite Thursday loss

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – It’s not what USA soccer fans were hoping for – a loss against Germany at the World Cup in Brazil. Germany won the game 1-0.

It was a game that had some eager fans playing hookey from work.

Dozens of fans gathered at Sidelines Sports Grille and Bar early Thursday to get a spot to watch, hoping the U.S. would topple Germany.

Since about 9:30 a.m., Sidelines, much like other locations around town, started to fill up with World Cup fans. If the U.S. had won, they would have been champions of the group they were in for the World Cup and sent to round 16.

This was a big game for the U.S. after Sunday’s game against Portugal that ended in a 2-2 tie.

Server Angela Pender said the fans enjoy getting together, no matter the outcome.

“We have a great time together, everybody loves to watch the game together. We meet our friends, family, everybody joins in and has a great time here,” she said.

During the game, fan Tony Pirrone said, “I think the U.S. is not pressuring Germany enough and it seems like Germany is pressing the USA and they have more control right now on offense.”

Since the U.S. lost Thursday, they will go on to play the winner of group H which will likely be Belgium.
