Charges dropped against ABQ attorney in shooting case

Chip Venie in court
Assault charges against Chip Venie were dropped.

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – An Albuquerque attorney who shot a homeless man in his downtown office is no longer facing charges, at least for now.

Chip Venie kept his promise and shot Stephen Biddinger in the leg when he stepped into the office back in 2012.

Venie’s wife recorded the shooting on her cell phone.

APD lapel video shows Biddinger on the porch bleeding.

Venie claimed it was self-defense and said he repeatedly told Biddinger to leave.

Biddinger is doing fine now and Venie was charged with assault.

The case was then moved to district court in Roswell but the DA there says she dropped the charge because there was a mistake in presenting the case to the grand jury.

News 13 was told it was a procedural error and that charges could later be re-filed. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
