$1M to provide housing for people with mental illness

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Bernalillo County is preparing to launch a new program that will help tackle an issue that surfaced after the scathing DOJ report on APD.

On Tuesday, commissioners approved $1.1 million to provide housing for the mentally ill released from MDC.

The money will provide homes for 75 people and offer resources for treatment.

Commissioners say 50 percent of inmates reportedly have mental health issues and often cycle back into jail without treatment options.
