Jail guard in fatal DWI crash resigns

Wrecked truck in DWI Crash

RIO ARRIBA COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – A jail guard arrested for allegedly driving drunk and killing two people near Española has resigned.

Justin Romero, 26, a corrections officer at the Rio Arriba County Jail quit Monday.

He had been placed on unpaid leave.

State police say Romero was drunk last Thursday when he drove his pickup in the wrong lane of Highway 84 and struck an oncoming car.

The two people inside that car were 23-year-old Leo Gurule and 45-year-old Carlos Archuleta.

Both were killed.

Last year, Romero was charged with having an open container in his vehicle.
