Crews continue gaining ground on Asayii Fire

GALLUP, N.M. (KRQE) – Firefighters are gaining ground on the wildfire that’s scorched more than 22 square miles there.

Officials say its now 65 percent contained.

The fire, which was started by someone burning weeds, has been burning for more than a week in the Chuska Mountains east of the Arizona-New Mexico state line.

All areas to the north of the fire opened Sunday, but roads south of Highway 134 remain closed for firefighter and public safety. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
