Alcohol appears to be factor in double fatal crash

RIO ARRIBA COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – New Mexico State Police are investigating a double fatal accident that took place Thursday evening on U.S. Highway 84.

Police say a 1997 Ford pickup traveling north crossed into the southbound lane and crashed head-on into a 2004 Pontiac.

The two people in the Pontiac, Leo Gurule, 23, of Española, and Carlos Archuleta, 45, of Santa Cruz, died at the scene.

The driver of the pickup was arrested, as alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
