Investigation complete in Carlsbad police shooting

Troy Kirkpatrick

CARLSBAD, N.M. (KRQE) – State police say they’ve completed their investigation into the escape and shooting of an inmate in Carlsbad who was later shot and killed by police.

Troy Kirkpatrick, 24, was being taken to the doctor by corrections officers at the Eddy County jail.

When he assaulted an officer, escaped and took off in a van that had the keys in the ignition.

Carlsbad police chased after him and after Kirkpatrick crashed, they shot him.

State police say they’ve now forwarded the case to the district attorney’s office.

Jail officials have not been willing to answer questions about how the escape happened or if any changes are being made in procedure because of it. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
