APD shootings draw international attention

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – APD’s problems are now international news.

CNN aired a six minute special that boiled down the department’s problems and put the chief and the DA on the spot.

The piece started out with the unedited shooting of homeless camper James Boyd in the foothills in March.

He was killed as he turned away from officers.

The CNN reporter then asked APD Chief Gorden Eden why no officers have paid the price for the 36 shootings since 2010 that have led to payouts of $30 million and counting.

Chief Eden first called the Boyd shooting justified but quickly backed down.

The FBI is now investigating whether the officers should be charged.

The correspondent also pressed DA Kari Brandenburg about why she’s never charged any officer involved in any shooting.

She says her office goes by the police reports written by APD.

And APD has never ruled any of its shootings unjustified.
