Escaped Roosevelt County inmate sentenced

ROOSEVELT, N.M. (KRQE) – An inmate who escaped through the roof of the Roosevelt County jail a year ago is going to remain behind bars for at least the next 10 years.

Stephen Phillips, 21, was sentenced Wednesday for the escape and other felony charges.

Phillips and another inmate fled the jail last June through an air conditioning vent.

He injured his leg during the escape and was caught at a nearby home an hour later.
