State allows Taos park name change

TAOS, N.M. (KRQE) – State officials say the town of Taos can rename Kit Carson Park.

The town council approved the name change after getting some requests.

While Kit Carson is credited with leading America’s western expansion, Native Americans say he caused great harm to their people and forced them from their native land.

There was concern the town would lose ownership of the park if it changed the name, but the state says a review of the deed shows it isn’t an issue. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
