ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The number of driver’s licenses issued to illegal immigrants in New Mexico plunged by nearly a third in the past year.
And there’s no clear explanation why.
The state grants driver’s licenses to undocumented drivers, yet there was still a 31 percent drop from 2012 to 2013.
Activists say it’s because of a weak economy.
But Governor Susana Martinez says it’s because the word is getting out that New Mexico prosecutes those trying to get licenses illegally.
