Group pushes feds to bring bears back to NM

Grizzly bears

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Grizzly bears once roamed southern New Mexico and now a group is pushing the feds to bring the bears back.

For two decades the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service has been looking into reintroducing grizzly bears in western states, including the Gila, to bring the population back up.

On Wednesday, an environmental group filed a petition with the feds to get going with a plan.

The Fish and Wildlife Service had no comment.

The Gila was once home to the smaller and now extinct Mexican grizzly until the 1930s. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
