Man arrested after confronting shoplifter

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – It’s a safe bet this guy didn’t expect to be in court Saturday.

He’s a convenience store clerk arrested for pulling a gun after chasing a woman for stealing a candy bar.

It happened at the Circle-K at Central and Pennsylvania on May 29.

According to the criminal complaint, 28-year-old Mark Stannebein first accosted the shoplifting suspect, and then pulled a gun when two men stepped in to intervene.

Police say the two men didn’t know Stannebein was a store employee.

The men fought over the gun. The gun went off, but no one was hurt.

Stannebein was arrested for aggravated assault and carrying a gun in liquor establishment.

The candy bar shoplifting suspect was issued a criminal summons.

Police say she also stole the clerk’s wallet during the struggle for the gun.
