Man accused of groping girl in church

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A man is facing charges that he sexually molested a girl inside a church in the middle of service.

It happened at a northwest Albuquerque church last night. The man accused in the case claimed he had a seizure and doesn’t remember anything. However, witnesses say he knew what he was doing when he grabbed the girl as she sat next to her mom.

The incident happened just after 7 p.m. Thursday at the Casa Del Rey Church near Coors and I-40.

According to the complaint, Luis Fierro, 55, was at an evening service, standing in a pew behind the girl.

Witnesses say when the service started, they saw a jittery Fierro reach over the pew and grab the girl’s private parts as she was laying down on a pew next to her mom, who was standing.

Other church-goers alerted the girl’s mom and the girl confirmed the same story, that she was grabbed.

Church staff watched the man until the service was over then got police. Fierro said he has seizures and sometimes loses control of his body. He also said he didn’t remember any little girl.

Police arrested and charged Fierro with criminal sexual contact of a minor.

Fierro was in court Friday, however a judge cancelled his bond hearing because Fierro only speaks Spanish and has yet to review the charges against him.

Fierro should be back in court on Saturday. As of Friday evening, he was in Bernalillo County’s Metropolitan Detention Center on a no bond hold.

KRQE News 13 also spoke to church staff Friday who say they are well aware of the incident but could not comment any further at this point.
