Forest worker's death ruled an accident

GILA WILDERNESS, N.M. (KRQE) – State police have ruled the death of a forest worker in southwestern New Mexico as an accident.

John Kavchar, 62, was last seen Saturday by his girlfriend when he went into the Gila Wilderness on horseback to check on the area around the signal peak fire.

Kavchar’s body was found the next day.

Police believe the two fell on a steep slope, and the animal fell on Kavchar killing them both.

Forest employees say Kavchar was the first to spot smoke from that fire which started May 11. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
