VALENCIA COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – People in Valencia County will soon be paying higher gross receipts taxes the question is just how much.
The County Commission approved a 3/8th of a percent hike. That translates into about 37 cents more for every hundred dollars spent.
That tax is not negotiable.
But the commission also passed an additional 1/8 of a percent increase that voters could force onto the November ballot. That would be an additional 12 cents per every hundred dollars spent.
In the past that measure has failed when put before voters.
The commissioners say the increase is in response to a $1.8 million shortfall, caused in part by a big increase in costs at the detention center.
