Park to be renamed due to controversial history

TAOS, N.M. (KRQE) – A popular park in Taos will soon have a new name after some controversy over the old one.

The Taos Town Council voted Wednesday night to rename Kit Carson Park which was named after the 19th century scout.

Residents in Taos, including a Native American woman, proposed the name change.

She argued that Carson should not be glorified because he caused a good deal of harm to the local Native American people.

During the Indian wars, Carson led armies that forced the Navajo, Mescalero, Kiowa and Comanche Indians out of their homeland.
