Man pleads guilty to 7-Eleven murder

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The man accused of murdering a 7-Eleven clerk has pled guilty to the crime.

According to the plea agreement, 22-year-old Eloy Aguilar pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, armed robbery and tampering with evidence on May 28.

In 2012, Aguilar killed 36-year-old Chad Mercer who was working at the 7-Eleven on University and Central during a robbery.

Police said Aguilar pulled the trigger, but that two other men were involved in the murder of the Albuquerque store clerk.

Julian De Herrera and Dylan Villarreal cut a deal with prosecutors so that they will not face murder charges. Under the deal, Villareal plead no contest to conspiracy to commit armed robbery and De Herrera plead to armed robbery and conspiracy.

Sentencing for all three men is set for July. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
