Rio Rancho kids win Vans contest

Rio Rancho van's contest shoe design

RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) – Some kids in Rio Rancho are getting the recognition they deserve, taking home the grand prize at this year’s Vans Custom Culture Contest.

Teams were challenged to design a shoe based on four different themes: art, music, action sports and local flavor.

Rio Rancho was named the winner Tuesday.

The team has been a top finalist for the southwest region three times now.

The group took home the grand-prize of $50,000 which will go to support its art program.

The winning design will be produced and sold at both Vans and Journeys stores. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
