ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE) – A 9-year-old boy was mauled by dogs on Vista Lane in Roswell on Wednesday morning.
“You hear the little boy lying in the hospital bed because he’s been bit trying to chock back the tears and everything it’s hard,” said the boy’s uncle Chris Ferguson.
The boy, who his uncle has identified as Colby Price, was outside his home feeding the family’s horses when three pit-bull mixes from a nearby pet rescue escaped and attacked him.
“Whenever they found him his shirt was ripped off and his shoes were missing and stuff,” said Ferguson.
Colby suffered puncture wounds to his neck, chest, arms and legs. The dogs also chewed off part of his ears.
Chaves County Sheriff’s Deputies say Colby’s dad, who is a detective at the Roswell Police Department, heard the commotion.
Deputies say he shot two of the dogs killing one of them. The second had to be put down because of his injuries and the other attack dog was able to get away.
The third dog is now being held at the Roswell Animal Shelter.
Deputies said they found another 15 animals at the Doggy Saviors rescue.
The owner released all of them to the shelter Wednesday morning.
KRQE News 13 tried to contact the rescue Wednesday, but they didn’t return our calls.
They did however release a statement saying their thoughts and prayers are with the young boy and his family.
“You take it for granted when you get to talk to them everyday laugh and joke,” said Ferguson. He’s my nephew, so all you can do is hope and pray for the best.”
Colby is recovering at a Texas hospital in unknown condition.
Deputies said charges are pending against the operator of the pet rescue, but they won’t say what those charges might be.
