ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Albuquerque police have arrested a man in a homicide they were staying pretty tight lipped about.
According to a criminal complaint, a neighbor called 911 at about 11:15 p.m. Saturday about a disturbance at the Arioso apartment complex on Montgomery near Pennsylvania.
The caller says he heard a man yelling and a woman screaming in an apartment nearby.
Police rushed over there, went inside and found April Briceno dead on the bedroom floor. They say she’d been stabbed a number of times.
Investigators say they found a lot of blood in the apartment, a gun on the floor, a large machete with blood on it, and a wallet with an ID belonging to Eric Coleman.
Police arrested and interviewed Coleman on Monday after the apartment manager called saying he was there asking for the keys to the apartment.
Police say Coleman told them he’d just gotten out of jail in Santa Fe and was planning on moving in with Briceno.
Coleman told police he and Briceno got into a “spiritual fight over heaven and hell.”
Coleman says he was on meth and blacked out and police say he admitted to stabbing Briceno twice in the chest.
In the complaint, Coleman told police Briceno took out a gun and shot at him, but he managed to get it away from her and threw it on the ground.
Coleman is charged with murder and remains in the MDC on a no-bond hold.
