NM court upholds 2010 murder conviction

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The state Supreme Court has upheld the murder conviction of a Hobbs man for a 2010 fatal shooting.

Nieves Sonny Ortega was sentenced to life in prison for killing Chris Laureles of Hobbs.

Authorities said the victim was killed in a dispute over money.

Ortega challenged the conviction saying he was being punished more than once for the same crime; while other charges were dropped the court affirmed Ortega’s convictions of first-degree murder.

Another man involved in the killing Mark Ruiz is also in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder and other crimes.
