ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Take a virtual tour through what could someday be the new and improved Winrock Town Center park in uptown, and you’ll see lots of greenery and lots of water.
“It is almost like a Disneyland,” Alfred Martinez said.
Video of the two-acre park shows a man-made lake at the center, fountains, cafes, a gazebo and even a space for evening performances in the summer that can turn into an ice skating rink in the winter.
“We wanted it to be a great central gathering place for the community,” said Darin Sand, vice president of development with the Goodman Realty Group.
Sand said there is no word on when this construction across from the main Imax theater entrance and south of Dillard’s could start, or how long it will take.
There have been delays since the group bought Winrock in 2007, but Sand points to construction of a Dave & Buster’s and designs in the works for Nordstrom Rack and DSW as proof things are moving forward.
“Our track record shows we are able to make things happen and so we will definitely be able to make this happen,” Sand said.
Still, some are skeptical this will become reality.
“It doesn’t even look like New Mexico whatsoever. It looks like some place you’d travel to go visit,” said Elizabeth Martinez.
“It’s a dream land. It’s a dream concept,” Alfred Martinez said.
Sand said the plants will be native to New Mexico and the plan is to use recycled water for all the greenery and the fountains.
Dave & Buster’s is scheduled to open this fall.
Nordstrom Rack and DSW are expected to open in 2016.
