Carlsbad officers shoot, kill escaped inmate

CARLSBAD, NM (KRQE) – New Mexico State Police confirm that an escaped inmate was shot in Carlsbad, New Mexico.

Carlsbad police say it happened in an alley behind the Tia Maria Apartment complex on Church Street around 10 a.m. Monday.

They said they were chasing 24-year-old Troy Kirkpatrick who had escaped from the Eddy County Detention Center and was fleeing in a car.

Police say officers had to use deadly force, shooting Kirkpatrick.

He later died at the hospital.

Just last week a man by the name of Troy Kirkpatrick was arrested after a two hour standoff in Carlsbad police had to gas the house to get him to come out. Police won’t confirm if it’s the same Kirkpatrick, but they expect to release more details Monday. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
