More heat is on the way today, but we’re not in danger of setting any records. The record high for Albuquerque today is 100°. So even though we’ll still reach the upper 90s, it won’t be quite enough to set a new record. Triple digit heat continues for the southern half of the state this afternoon.
The first hint at changes occurs across the northeast today. A weak cold front will edge in, helping to produce a few dry storms across the northeast. The front doesn’t make much progress and retreats back out of the state late Friday. So expect the state to remain hot through Saturday. Despite the front retreating, moisture continues to spread across the east where some storms could be severe.
Late Saturday and into Sunday, another cold front approaches New Mexico. This one will have enough strength to cross more of the state. Storm chances will continue along the central mountain chain and points east, but the bigger benefit will be the cooler temperatures for Sunday as afternoon highs return to near average.
