Sheriff’s primary election brings big upsets

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – There were some big upsets Tuesday night in the sheriff’s races, aside from Tommy Rodella.

Bernalillo County incumbent Republican Dan Houston, who’s made waves over the last year didn’t win. He was narrowly defeated by Scott Baird, who worked alongside Houston and recently retired from the sheriff’s department.

Baird will now take on Democrat Manny Gonzales, who was appointed to sheriff in 2011 and served a little more than a year.

Two former sheriffs – John Paul Trujillo of Sandoval County and Rene Rivera of Valencia County – tried to win back their seats but were unsuccessful. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
