Former candidate gets over 2 years in stalking case

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A former congressional candidate who was caught on camera doing some shocking things to his opponent’s home is heading to jail.

“He believes he’s innocent…He’s crazy,” John Jones, the husband of Janice Arnold-Jones said.

Home surveillance video in 2012 showed Gary Smith creeping up to a car and slashing the tires. It was the Albuquerque home of Janice Arnold-Jones.

The two republicans were running against each for congress and Jones had gotten Smith kicked off the ballot for not having enough valid signatures

Smith was then charged with stalking after driving by Jones’ house after a judge told him to stay away.

And, she’s not the only victim.

Smith’s former campaign manager, Rhead Story, who has since died, had told police he had to replace 54 tires that Smith slashed.

Smith recently plead no contest in both cases, but at Tuesday’s sentencing he argued to change that plea.Former candidate gets jail time in stalking case2

A judge said no and sentenced Smith to two and half years in jail.

“A man of his experience, intellect, maturity…I think there’s something wrong,” Jones said.

Story’s wife says she is worried about what will happen when Smith is released.

“I would love for him to at least got some sort of mental help with this,” Wanda Story said. “They’re not going to do this…that’s the only thing I wish.”

Smith was also caught on camera slashing the tires of a former El Paso neighbor.

He will also face charges in that case.
