Stage II fire restrictions in effect in ABQ

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Stage II fire restrictions went into effect Monday in Albuquerque along with an open burning ban due to extreme fire conditions throughout the metro area.

The fire restrictions apply to all open space areas within city boundaries, including west mesa grass land, the Bosque and the open spaces areas of the Sandia foothills, according to city officials.

Those violating the fire restrictions could face fines up to $500 and/or up to 90 days in jail.

The Albuquerque fire and police departments are asking citizens to report suspicious activity involving fire, sparks, camping or smoking at 505-242-COPS.

Stage I & II Restrictions prohibit:

  • Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire, campfire, charcoal, coal, or stove fire
  • Smoking
  • Possessing, discharging or using any kind of fireworks or other pyrotechnic device
  • Possessing or using a motor vehicle off any publicly designated roadways, except when parking in developed parking lots or at developed trailheads
  • Operating a chainsaw or spark emitting equipment
  • Operating any internal or external combustion engine
  • Welding or operating acetylene or other torch with an open flame
  • Camping or overnight stay

All open space areas within the municipal boundaries remain open. Those recreating in open space areas are required to remain on established trails, paths and levee roads when enjoying the open space.
