Plane crash victims honored at memorial

SILVER CITY, N.M. (KRQE) – The three New Mexico teens killed in a plane crash were honored Sunday in a memorial.

Ella Kirk, Michael Mahl and Ella Myers, who attended Aldo Leopold High School in Silver City, died in a single-engine plane crash May 23.

The plane was trying to land at an airport in Silver City when it suddenly crashed and burst into flames.

The school’s Facebook page said there was a community memorial service Sunday to honor the kids who one parent described as remarkable.

It’s still not clear what caused the plane to go down.

A fourth person, the plane’s pilot, Doctor Peter Hochla also died.

Hochla was a doctor based in Albuquerque.

He started flying more than 10 years ago so he could visit more clinics around the state. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
