ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – There were some frightening moments on Interstate 40 Saturday. State police say a routine traffic stop ended when the driver passed away.
State police said the driver died and they are trying to figure out what happened.
They say an officer doing standard patrols noticed a semi-truck speeding around 1 p.m. on westbound I-40 between Atrisco Vista and 98th Street.
The officer pulled over the semi and approached the driver, asking him to step out of the truck. When the driver exited, he collapsed from what state police call a medical issue.
They say it’s standard protocol to ask semi-truck drivers to get out of their trucks to speak with officers after they’re pulled over.
The officer conducted CPR after the man collapsed until EMS arrived. When EMS arrived, they took over but it was too late.
State police officers couldn’t say whether the driver was showing signs of illness before he collapsed.
They have not released the driver’s name.
