NM vet killed in Kabul to receive defense medal

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A New Mexico army vet killed in Afghanistan is receiving a special honor.

Command Sergeant Major Robert D. Halsell was among 15 people killed in a suicide bombing in Kabul last May.

He was there working as an American contractor.

Before that he served in the army for 26 years.

Halsell was raised in Hatch his father was a former mayor of Hatch and an APD officer.

Friday Halsell’s widow will receive his defense of freedom medal. The medal is for civilian employees killed while working to preserve national security.
