Emails released regarding WIPP leak

CARLSBAD, N.M. (KRQE) – The state’s Environment Department has just released emails about the possible cause of the radiation leak at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant near Roswell.

The emails from Los Alamos National Lab show lab officials allowed materials, which chemists there may have known were not compatible, to be mixed.

Investigators are now looking at how decisions were made on changes in the contents of the drums following the February leak.

WIPP managers say the plant could be closed for up to three years.
