New veterans memorial includes GLBT community

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A new veteran’s memorial is set to open in Albuquerque on Monday.

American Veterans for Equal Rights say this memorial is designed to be inclusive of gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender veterans as well as their straight allies.

A veteran and founder of the local chapter passed away about two years ago. He left an estate to pay for the memorial.

It includes a large granite stone surrounded by bricks. Each brick can be sponsored by family members or friends of veterans.

A dedication ceremony for the memorial is planned for 6 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park at Louisiana at Gibson in southeast Albuquerque.
