Carlsbad skunk tests positive for rabies


CARLSBAD, N.M. (KRQE) – A skunk in Carslbad has tested positive for rabies.

In the last week, officials in Carlsbad and the surrounding areas have responded to several sightings of skunks acting strangely and they believe they are rabid.

Animal Control caught one skunk last week and it is rabid.

It was captured on a property where at least 15 feral cats were being fed.

It’s unknown if the cats were exposed to the skunk, but Animal Control will start trapping the cats out of precaution. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
