ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE)- Many witnesses stood by and watched when the argument first broke out between the couple but one man stepped in and nearly paid for it with his life. About half a dozen people were hanging out in a vacant parking lot before the altercation unfolded. Several of them camp out in the area and often hang out nearby.
Witnesses told KRQE News 13 Friday, they were close to the couple and the man who stepped in to help the woman.
Droplets of blood line the sidewalk in a parking lot at 2nd and Arvada. It paints a painful picture of a disagreement that ended in violence.
One woman, who asked we not show her face, was sitting on a nearby bench with friends when she says a couple she knew began arguing.
“They were supposed to get married next month but when they get intoxicated, they start arguing really bad,” she says.
The woman says, this time, it wasn’t long before things got physical.
“He threw a can at her and hit her right in the face,” says the woman.
That’s when she says one of her friends stepped in.
“He tried to help her because he saw her get knocked down,” she says.
Worried the fight might escalate from there, the woman says she left with one of her friends. She was right. Soon after the man intervened to protect the woman, he was attacked.
“I knew him because he was a good friend of ours. We camped down the street over here and he used to camp by us. He never bothered us, he never bothered anybody and he was a nice guy,” the woman says.
Police say the stabbing victim is stable in the hospital.
Witnesses say the stabbing victim was not the only one to intervene. They say several of the couples friends tried to break up the argument early on and thought things had calmed down before the man was stabbed.
The woman who was assaulted was treated at the hospital and released Friday morning.
