ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – It seems more Hispanics are identifying themselves as white.
That’s according to a new census released Thursday.
The report estimates a total of 1.2 million Americans of the 35 million Americans identified in 2000 as Hispanic, Latino or Spanish origin changed their race from other to white between 2000 and 2010.
According to the census, Hispanics have assimilated as white Americans, much like Italians or Irish, who were not universally considered to be white.
However research suggests that Hispanics who have experienced discrimination are less likely to identify as white.
The data also raises the question of race population although white is slowly becoming a minority, with Hispanics marking whites, whites could continue to remain the majority.
