President Obama Speaks on the Organ Mountains Designation

Organ Mountain monument still on the table

President Obama is scheduled to speak on the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument designation on Wednesday in Washington.

On Monday, the White House confirmed the president would sign a proclamation that would protect nearly 500,000 acres in the Organ Mountain area near Las Cruces.

According to the Organ Mountains website, big historical moments have taken place on the lands such as training for the Apollo Space Mission. Thousands of Native American petroglyphs and pictographs can be found on the land that is home to Billy the Kid’s Outlaw Rock and Geronimo’s Cave.

There are several day hikes, picnic areas, archaeological sites, mountain biking trails, horse trails, climbing sites and more in the Organ Mountains area.
